Don't miss out on the Big Solar Event this weekend! Forget the usual Lone Star bragging rights, because the spotlight is on the Lone Stare State for not one, but two solar events in a six-month Texas-sized extravaganza!

First in the cosmic lineup is the annular solar eclipse on Saturday, October 14, 2023 - picture the moon wearing a fancy sun hat, leaving us with a dazzling ring to admire. The eclipse will be viewed differently depending on where you watch it.

The view in San Angelo will be considered a deep partial with a magnitude of 95.5%. It will kick off about 10:20 am with the full eclipse being about 11:48 am and the full cycle finishing up around 1:25 pm. VERY IMPORTANT, be sure to prepare for this adventure. To view this event you will need certified eclipse glasses or filters because you don't want to miss the big event and more importantly you don't want to injure your eyes! (Remember, never use regular sunglasses or homemade filters for eclipse watching - only certified eclipse glasses or approved solar filters will keep your eyes out of harm's way! And they must be used for the entire viewing)

As amazing as the first eclipse will be, the bigger event will be on Monday, April 8, 2024, with the total solar eclipse. It's the kind of event that even armadillos would pause their digging to witness! As Katie Kissiar, the maestro of celestial education at the McDonald Observatory, puts it, "Come for the sun and stay for the stars, " because, let's face it, you can't have a total eclipse without a new moon. And a new moon, my friends, is prime time for stargazing. And stargazing is a West Texas speciality!

The fact that our neck of the woods is hosting not one but two of these cosmic extravaganzas is downright thrilling! So grab your calendar, make your plans, and take a moment to tip your hat to the stars. It's going to be a show you won't want to miss!
